Modality Definitions

 

Holman Insurance Brokers Ltd. recognizes many modalities and therapies in the Holistic and Complementary & Alternative Healthcare field.

Discipline (D) is training in a stand-alone modality, while Specialization (S) requires a discipline-level of training in another modality for some educational components. This list however not exhaustive and is being updated regularly.

Under our insurance program, these therapies fall under different categories for rating. Either A, B or C. This is constantly being updated.

A

Active Release Technique (S) – Cat B

Active Release Technique applies specific myofascial release methods to rapidly treat musculoskeletal pain, stress, and restrictions, caused by damage, injury, or repeated stress to the myofascial. Extremely efficient and effective, some discomfort may be experienced from this fast-acting deep-tissue myofascial work.

 Acupuncture is a type of alternative medicine that treats patients by insertion and manipulation of solid, generally thin needles in the body. Through its origins, acupuncture has been embedded in the concepts of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM). Its general theory is based on the premise that bodily functions are regulated by the flow of an energy-like entity called Qi. Acupuncture aims to correct imbalances in the flow of Qi by stimulation of anatomical locations on or under the skin called acupuncture points, most of which are connected by channels known as medians.

Aqua – Chi (D) – Cat B

Aqua-Chi Detox Foot Bath combines the life-giving properties of water with a specialized bio-electric charge, which enhances and amplifies the body’s ability to heal. Dramatically increase energy levels and help detoxify your body with the Aqua Chi foot bath. The negative ions created during a session are similar to those found in hot springs and other naturally charged water sources known to be beneficial to the body.

Aqua-Fitness Instructor – Cat B

 The use of water in water aerobics supports the body and reduces the risk of muscle or joint injury. The mitigation of gravity by flotation places less stress on the joints when stretching, and can allow a greater range of motion.

Acupressure is based on the Chinese meridian system. It uses stimulation of a specific point or points to correct the energy flow within the meridians. The release of muscular tension is often part of the treatment. Correction of the energy flows can have general or specific therapeutic effects on any or all systems of the body. Requires min 2000 hours of related training or license.

Alexander Technique™ (D) – Cat A

Alexander Technique™ is an educational process that helps the client achieve greater awareness of their body. This results in more effective and efficient use of their body. Combined with hands-on treatment this prevents or helps recovery from tension, pain, postural and structural imbalances, and repetitive use injury.

Allergy Testing (D)- Cat C

Allergy Testing is a method for medical diagnosis of allergies that attempts to provoke a small, controlled, allergic response.

Amma/Anma Massage (D) – Cat B

Amma/Anma massage is based on ancient touch principals like acupressure, massage, and reflexology. Balance and harmony in energy flow are sought using pressure to ah shui points and massage techniques to the tissues. It is applied to clothed clients for relaxation through to all conditions caused by improper energy flow.

Applied Kinesiology™ (S) – Cat C

Applied Kinesiology™ uses a variety of assessment and treatment techniques, including muscle testing, meridian therapy, joint mobilization, myofascial techniques, cranial sacral based techniques, nutritional counseling, and reflexology to treat a wide variety of conditions and energy imbalances.

Aromatherapy (D/S) – Cat B

Aromatherapists can assess and support the treatment of or enhance a variety of physical and mental conditions through careful selection of quality plant essential oils (not flower essences). Some may use lymph drainage or relaxation massage as part of the application.

Art Therapy (S) – Cat B

Art Therapy is practiced by qualified, registered Art Therapists who work with children, young people, adults and the elderly. Clients who can use art therapy may have a wide range of difficulties, disabilities or diagnoses. These include, for example, emotional, behavioral or mental health problems, learning or physical disabilities, life-limiting conditions, brain-injury or neurological conditions and physical illness. Art therapy may be provided for groups, or for individuals, depending on clients’ needs.

Aston-Patterning™ (D) – Cat B

Aston Patterning™ is a holistic and integrated system of movement education, soft tissue massage techniques, ergonomic and fitness analysis and adaptation. The goal is to release the lines and spirals of stress or damage in the body, lessening pain and leading to greater ease and performance in movement.

Aura-Soma Color Healing (D) – Cat B

Aura-Soma is a color energy system that puts the power of color in your hands through its self-care products. Using them, you can improve your general well being and know yourself better. The energy of Aura-Soma color helps you penetrate the layers of your awareness to tap into the deep source of your potential. Then, without effort, your inner qualities naturally flow to the surface.

Ayurveda (D/S) – Cat B

Ayurveda is a system of traditional medicine native to India. Ayurvedic practitioners developed a number of medicinal preparations and surgical procedures for the treatment of various ailments. In Sanskrit, words āyus, meaning “longevity”, and Veda, meaning “knowledge” or “science”. The earliest literature on Indian medical practice appeared during the Vedic period in India.

B

Bach Flower Remedies (S) – Cat B

 Bach Flower Remedies is the dilutions of flower material developed by Edward Bach, an English bacteriologist, pathologist and homeopath, in the 1930s. Each remedy is used alone or in conjunction with other remedies, and each flower is believed by advocates to impart specific qualities to the remedy. Bach flower remedies are also used on pets and domestic animals. Remedies are usually taken orally. 

Barbara Brennan Healing Science – (S) – Cat A

 Barbara Brennan Healing Science is a system of healing that combines hands-on healing techniques with spiritual and psychological processes touching every aspect of your life.

Behavioural Analysis (D) – Cat A 

Behavioural Analysis is a science that involves using modern behavioral learning theory to modify behaviors. Behavior analysts reject the use of hypothetical constructs and focus on the observable relationship of behavior to the environment. By functionally assessing the relationship between a targeted behavior and the environment, the methods of ABA can be used to change that behavior.

Bio-Energetics (S) – Cat B 

 Bioenergetics is the subject of a field of biochemistry that concerns energy flow through living systems. This is an active area of biological research that includes the study of thousands of different cellular processes such as cellular respiration and the many other metabolic processes that can lead to production and utilization of energy in forms such as ATP molecules. 

Bio Feedback (S) – Cat B 

Bio Feedback is the process of becoming aware of various physiological functions using instruments that provide information on the activity of those same systems, with a goal of being able to manipulate them at will.[1][2] Processes that can be controlled include brainwavesmuscle tone, skin conductance, heart rate and pain perception.   

Biofeedback may be used to improve health or performance, and the physiological changes often occur in conjunction with changes to thoughts, emotions, and behavior.

 Body Mind Balancing (S) – Cat B 

BodyMind Balancing is a combination of therapy techniques. It uses these to re-establish communication within the bodymind system: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. The techniques used are Applied Kinesiology, Hatha Yoga and various physical and energy systems.

Body Talk™ (D) – Cat C

Body Talk™ practitioners use a system of muscle testing to coordinate and balance the energetic communication of the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual components of the body. Based on the answers given by the body through the muscle testing, the practitioner can focus in on specific balances.

Bonnie Prudden Myotherapy™ (D) – Cat B

Bonnie Prudden Myotherapy™ is focused on treatments using the complex system of trigger points used (often in a more superficial manner) in massage therapy. These trigger points are the locus which, when released, causes the release of the muscle in spasm or tension. Treatment includes corrective exercises.

Bowen Technique™ (D/S) – Cat B

Bowen Technique™ addresses the body as a whole unit rather than only presenting symptoms. Bowenwork consists of a series of gentle rolling, connective tissue moves. The Body’s Autonomic Nervous System responds to the work, allowing the body to restore itself to its original blueprint. The technique addresses the musculoskeletal framework, fascia, nerves, and internal organs.

Brain Gym™ (D/S) – Cat B

Brain Gym™ uses movement to accelerate learning and enhance performance. They are done as sets of exercises that help coordinate and integrate the two hemispheres of the brain and can be done on their own or integrated with other therapies.

Brandon Raynor Massage™ (D) – Cat C

Raynor Massage is a system of bodywork developed by Australian trained Naturopath Brandon Raynor. It covers not just the muscles of the body but also the skeletal system and the subtle energy systems of the body. Another important concept of Raynor massage is that the source of some of the residual tension in the body can be from emotional or stress related reasons. We believe in the well accepted Eastern medical theories that the physical body is a gross manifestation of a subtle body composed of life force and emotions and other subtle energies. We refer to this life force as chi or prana. A blockage or disruption in the flow of chi or prana will cause an area of the physical body to become tight, blocked or forced out of position in the case of the bones.

Breath work (S) – Cat B

Breath work Refers to many forms of conscious alteration of breathing, such as connecting the inhale and exhale, or energetically charging and discharging, when used within psychotherapy or meditation. Proponents believe breath work technique may be used to attain alternate states of consciousness, and that sustained practice of techniques may result in spiritual or psychological benefits, commonly used in Meditation & Yoga exercises)

C

Chair Massage (D/S) – Cat C

Chair Massage, also known as On-Site massage, is a specific, effective de-stressing massage and acupressure-based treatment done with the client fully clothed in specially-developed massage chairs that can be taken into almost any professional, public, or private setting. Sessions range from 10 minutes to an hour.

Chakra Balancing (D) – Cat B

Each person has what is called a life force energy and this is run by their chakra. It is said that the chakra is actually an axis point on the body that talks with that life force energy. These seven points are the base chakra, the sex chakra, the solar plexus chakra, the chakra of the heart, the chakra of the throat, the chakra of the brow, and lastly the crown chakra. These points on our body take in energy from the people in our environment and also transmit energy to the people in our environment. Therefore, they also influence us mentally, emotionally, and our daily activities including spiritual activities that we may do.

 Child & Play Therapy (D/S) – Cat B

 Child & Play Therapy value of play therapy and its contribution to an individual’s mental, emotional, social and psychological well being, usually done by psychotherapists or psychologists.

Cranial Sacral/CranioSacral Therapy (D/S) – Cat B

Cranial Sacral Therapy begins by assessing the effects throughout the body of restrictions to the flow (pulses) of the cerebral spinal fluid. A variety of very gentle treatment techniques applied both directly and indirectly release the body’s connective tissue restrictions, and optimize the cerebral spinal fluid flow. CranioSacral Therapy was further developed and specialized from the osteopathic cranial sacral therapy by the osteopathic doctor, Dr. Upledger.

Crystal Healing (D) – Cat B

 With Crystal Healing, the practitioner places crystals on different parts of the body, often corresponding to chakras, or places crystals around the body in an attempt to construct an “energy grid”, which is purported to surround the client with healing energy.

 Dance Movement Therapy (D) -Cat B

 Dance Movement Therapy use of movement and dance for emotional, cognitivesocial, behavioral and physical conditions. As a form of expressive therapy, DMT is founded on the basis that movement and emotion are directly related. The ultimate purpose of DMT is to find a healthy balance and a sense of wholeness. 

Dayana Technique (S) – Cat C

Dayana Technique is a specialization for massage therapists. It combines the ideas and techniques of Esalen massage, myofascial release, Lomi Lomi, Qi Gong, and energy work, to produce a blend that encourages massage therapists to get the most out of the therapeutic benefits of a whole-body approach.

 Deep Oscillation therapy (D) – Cat B

 Deep Oscillation therapy was designed for professional use in sports medicine centers and physiotherapeutic clinics as well as for centers specializing in sports-related arthroscopy and surgery, to help the bodies regenerate faster. 

Dietitian (S) – Cat B

A dietitian is a health care professional who focuses on proper food and nutrition in order to promote good health. They supervise the preparation and service of food, develop modified diets, participate in research, and educate individuals and groups on good nutritional habits.

E

Dowsing (D) – Cat B

 In Dowsing, we train our nervous-muscular system to be like wires that connect the intuitive part of our ‘mind-brain team’ to a tool that indicates the nature of the message – to a Dowsing tool, that signals YES or NO. 

Ear Candling – Cat C

An ear candle is a hollow cone about 25 centimeters (10 inches ) long made from a fabric tube soaked in beeswax, paraffin or a mixture of the two. Ear candling, also called ear coning or thermal auricular therapy, involves placing an ear candle in the outer ear while the patient lies on his or her side and lighting the top of the candle. Some advocates claim that the procedure relieves sinus infection and pain, cures ear infection and relieves earaches, improves hearing, purifies the blood, strengthens the brain, cures cancer, in addition to cleaning the ears.

In accordance with the provisions of the Food and Drugs Act and the Medical Devices Regulations, Health Canada considers that ear candles are a class of medical devices, which requires a license issued by Health Canada before they can be sold. To date, Health Canada has not issued any license for ear candles. Therefore, the manufacture and sale of any ear candle in Canada are illegal.

Eden Energy Medicine (D) – Cat B 

Energy Medicine heals the body by activating its natural healing energies; you also heal the body by restoring energies that have become weak, disturbed, or out of balance. To accomplish this goal, energy medicine utilizes techniques from healing traditions such as acupuncture, yoga, kinesiology, and qi gong. 

Flow, balance, and harmony can be non-invasively restored and maintained within an energy system by tapping, massaging, pinching, twisting, or connecting specific energy points (acupoints) on the skin; by tracing or swirling the hand over the skin along specific energy pathways; through exercises or postures designed for specific energetic effects; by focused use of the mind to move specific energies; and/or by surrounding an area with healing energies (one person’s energies impacts another’s). 

Edu-K™ (D/S)- Cat B

Edu-K™ – Educational Kinesiology, (Edu-K) stands for Learning through movement. Edu-K is used to assist clients to unlock their potential by formulating goals and finding out what is internally blocking the client from reaching his/her goals. Specialized techniques are used to diffuse the blocks, creating a bridge for new learning or action.

Electrotherapy (D) – Cat B

Electrotherapy uses electrical energy as a medical treatment. In medicine, the term electrotherapy can apply to a variety of treatments, including the use of electrical devices such as deep brain stimulators for neurological disease. The term has also been applied specifically to the use of electric current to speed wound healing. Additionally, the term “electrotherapy” or “electromagnetic therapy” has also been applied to a range of alternative medical devices and treatments.

EMF Balancing (D) – Cat B

EMF Balancing new energy system designed to accelerate the integration of Spirit and Biology, so that you can increase your health and co-create the healing miracles you need. The training is an initiation into a new awareness of your own electromagnetic nature. You receive information about your energy anatomy that will permanently establish a powerful connection to the Cosmic Lattice (Universal Energy Source), and you will be able to use this new energy immediately. 

Emotional Freedom Technique (D) – Cat B

A technique derived from the concept of energy meridians in the body, similar to acupuncture used in Eastern medicine and incorporating psychotherapy to reach emotional issues that may have caused a disruption in the energy of the body.

Useful for a very broad range of issues from physical pain, emotional issues, limiting beliefs, dealing with stress and, in some cases, chronic disease.

Energetic Healing (D) – Cat B

Energetic Healing is an umbrella term for any therapy that manipulates the energy circuits in our physical or subtle bodies to regain balance and facilitate our body’s innate healing mechanisms. Some of the more well know therapies that fall under the heading “energetic healing” include Reiki, Reflexology, Kinesiology, Thought Field Therapy and Acupuncture. However, energetic healing also encompasses lesser known natural therapies such as: Aura and Chakra balancing; Flower and Vibrational Essences, Crystal Healing, Colour Therapy, Spiritual Healing, and other forms of bodywork. 

 Energy Field Work (D) – Cat B

Energy Field Work is therapy through energy work that initiates healing and well-being. Suited well for persons who are depressed, fatigued, anxious or simply unhappy with life, energy field work is also a method of personal growth and spiritual enlightenment. Energy field work, (similar to Reiki in nature) consists of balancing the chakras within the body. By clearing and/or opening the chakras within the human anatomy, individuals are empowered with vibrational balance and harmony; thus, encouraging overall well-being — mind, body and soul. 

Energy Psychology (D) – Cat A

Energy psychology addresses the relationship of energy systems to emotion, cognition, behavior and health. These systems include electrical activity of the nervous system and heart, meridians, biophotons, biofields, etc.

 Energy Tapping (D) – Cat B

Energy Tapping is a simple and easy-to-use process where you: tune into your body-mind, speak a truth about how you feel right now, and choose how you’d like to feel… all while tapping on specific natural comfort points. This unique formula helps you shift your physical and emotional energy in the direction of relief… towards feeling really good. Energy Tapping brings relief from negative emotions; it can help you remove blocks to deep and abiding happiness. Tapping on long-standing fears, old traumas, and negative self-worth will open the door to more peace and joy in your life. 

Energy Work (D/S) – Cat B

Energy Work encompasses work that is done by modulating the frequency of the practitioner’s energy (by thought or by “channeling” other sources) which in turn can modulate or entrain the client’s energy. Sometimes used for assessment, it will balance or increase the client’s energy flow, fostering healing and relaxation.

Ergonomic Therapy (D) – Cat B

Ergonomic Therapy – is the study of designing equipment and devices that fit the human body, its movements, and its cognitive abilities. Ergonomics is employed to fulfill the two goals of health and productivity. It is relevant in the design of such things as safe furniture and easy-to-use interfaces to machines and equipment. Proper ergonomic design is necessary to prevent repetitive strain injuries, which can develop over time and can lead to long-term disability. 

Esalen™ (S) – Cat B

Esalen™ Massage has three interrelated aspects: gentle flowing strokes or kneading to open and release tension; passive joint movement to enhance well-being; and a good client-therapist interaction to encourage conscious awareness. Good for relaxation, stress reduction, pain relief, energy release or balance.

Esoteric Healing (D) – Cat B

Esoteric Healing within the energy field of each person is seven major centers. Each of these centers energizes or vitalizes its related nerve center, endocrine gland, internal organ system and the circulatory system. It is within this energy field that the cause of disease appears to be located. Through training, a practitioner can learn to work with areas that are weak or congested within the energy field, and by use of various balancing techniques, can bring the individuals energy field to a more flowing, healthy, harmonious state.

Feldenkrais™ (D) – Cat B

Feldenkrais™ stimulates the nervous system’s innate self-organizing abilities through sensory motor activities, freeing us from habitual patterns and allowing new patterns of thinking, moving, and feeling to emerge. It opens the exploration of the biological and cultural relationships of learning, thought, and movement.

Guided Imagery (D) – Cat A

Method of psychotherapy. It is a therapeutic technique in which a facilitator uses descriptive language intended to psychologically benefit mental imagery, often involving several or all senses, in the mind of the listener. In this method, the imagination plays an important role together with discussions with the client. 

H

Healing Touch™ (D/S) – Cat B

Healing Touch™ is an energy-based approach to health and healing. These non-invasive techniques use the hands to clear, energize and balance the human and environmental energy fields thus affecting, facilitating, and harmonizing the client’s physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health and healing.

 Herbalism (D) – Cat B 

 Herbalism is a traditional medicinal or folk medicine practice based on the use of plants and plant extracts

Hellerwork™ Structural Integration (D) – Cat C

Hellerwork™ Structural Integration focuses on the connective tissue patterns of the body. Either an individually tailored programme or an 11-part series, it uses a three-pronged approach of gentle deep tissue bodywork with associated dialogue and movement education. Good for injury and repetitive strain treatment.

Holistic Counselling (D) – Cat A

Holistic Counselling is an alternative form of psychotherapy that focuses on the whole person (mind, body, and spirit) and health. The goal is the growth of the whole person.

Homeopathy (D/S) – Cat B

Homeopathy is a form of alternative medicine in which practitioners claim to treat patients using highly diluted[2][3] preparations that are believed to cause healthy people to exhibit symptoms that are similar to those exhibited by the patient.

Horticultural Therapy (D) – Cat B

Horticultural Therapy as the engagement of a person in gardening activities, facilitated by a trained therapist, to achieve specific therapeutic treatment goals. 

Hurley/Osborn Technique™ (D) – Cat B

Hurley-Osborn Technique™ is a soothing, non-force, non-invasive form of healing. Its aim is to correct postural distortions and promote vitality and good health. It does so by realigning the body through light touch to key contact points, releasing the tension, strain, and fatigue.

Hypnotherapy (D) – Cat B

Hypnosis is a mental state (according to “state theory”) or imaginative role-enactment (according to “non-state theory”). It is usually induced by a procedure known as a hypnotic induction, which is commonly composed of a long series of preliminary instructions and suggestions. Hypnotic suggestions may be delivered by a hypnotist in the presence of the subject, or maybe self-administered (“self-suggestion” or “autosuggestion”)

I

Infant Massage (D/S) – Cat C

Infant Massage is not a pediatric massage (massage on infants). Rather it is participatory courses in which a parent learns simple massage techniques to do with their own infants to deepen the parent-child connection, learn health giving and relaxing massage and stretches, and manage some childhood discomforts.

 Integrated Energy Therapy (D) – Cat B 

 Integrated Energy Therapy uses the violet angelic energy ray, as brought to us through the nine Healing Angels of the Energy Field, to work directly with your 12-Strand Spiritual DNA. IET supports you in safely and gently releasing limiting energy patterns of your past, empowering and balancing your life in the present, and helps you to reach for the stars as you evolve into your future. We chose the term “Integrated” in our name to convey our healing vision of “integrating the pain of the past, into the power of the present, to bring about the joy of the future.

Iridology (D) – Cat B

Iridology technique whose proponents claim that patterns, colors, and other characteristics of the iris can be examined to determine information about a patient’s systemic health. Practitioners match their observations to iris charts, which divide the iris into zones that correspond to specific parts of the human body. Iridologists see the eyes as “windows” into the body’s state of health.

Jin Shin Do® Acupressure (D) – Cat C

Jin Shin Do® (“The Way of the Compassionate Spirit”) is a unique synthesis of Japanese acupressure techniques, Chinese acupressure theory, Reichian segmental theory, Taoist philosophy and Qigong exercises. It identifies tension points associated with common physical problems and distressing emotions. It is also referred to as Body Mind Accupressure®.

Jin Shin Jyutsu® (D) – Cat B

Jin Shin Jyutsu® is based on a formalization of energy healing traditions in Japan. Jin means “Art”; Shin means “Creator”; and Jyutsu means “man of knowing and compassion”. It is an energy-balancing art that adjusts the flow of energy through the body by focusing on the 26 “safety energy locks” or key regulation points of the body energy flow.

K

Kinesiology (D/S) – Cat C

Kinesiology also known as human kinetics is the scientific study of human movement. Kinesiology addresses physiological, mechanical, and psychological mechanisms. Applications of kinesiology to human health include biomechanics and orthopedics, rehabilitation, such as physical and occupational therapy, as well as sport and exercise. Individuals who have earned degrees in kinesiology can work in research, the fitness industry, clinical settings, and in industrial environments

LEVA (S)- Cat B

LEVA is a specific machine recognized by Health Canada that is used in clinics to augment massage therapy, physiotherapy, and chiropractic treatments through carefully-modulated microcurrent stimulation of muscle and connective tissue. The specific pulse waveform is gentle and stimulates healing in the area.

Lifeline Technique® (D) – Cat B

Lifeline Technique is a philosophy, science, and quantum technology that bridges gaps between the conscious and subconscious mind. At the root of every symptom, stress and disease is a subconscious emotional pattern of reaction. When activated this pattern of reaction will cause both behavioural and biological stressors. Lomilomi is a flowing, vibrant, and deeply relaxing full-body massage. It enhances all areas of one’s health, well-being, and self-awareness by bringing harmony to body, mind, and spirit. Massage Therapy is the manipulation of the soft tissues (primarily muscle and connective tissue) of the body. It strives to achieve balance and health in the body by affecting the body’s systems. Maternal Massage is a specialized focus of massage therapy, sometimes with other added techniques, applied to treat the discomforts and stress of pregnancy, and maintain optimum health and muscle-tone throughout the pregnancy, birth, postpartum and nursing period.

Meridian Stress Assessment (D) – Cat B

Meridian Stress Assessment (MSA) follows the principles of Chinese Medicine and measures electrical points on the body to determine whether the corresponding organ is stressed, healthy or weakened. Sometimes MSA is referred to as Electrodermal Screening or Computerized. 

Mitzvah (D) – Cat B

Myomassology is a holistic branch of massage therapy, that teaches the integration of massage, chair massage, lymphatic drainage, reflexology, acupressure, and energy work. Practitioners also have the choice of several other elective therapies of interest to better support the client holistically.

Naturopathy is a form of alternative medicine based on a belief in vitalism, which posits that a special energy called vital energy or vital force guides bodily processes such as metabolism, reproduction, growth, and adaptation. Naturopathic philosophy favors a holistic approach, and, like conventional medicine seeks to find the least invasive measures necessary for symptom improvement or resolution, thus encouraging minimal use of surgery and unnecessary drugs. The scope of practice varies widely between jurisdictions, and naturopaths in unregulated jurisdictions may use the Naturopathic Doctor designation or other titles regardless of level of education.

Neuromuscular Integration (D) – Cat C

Neuromuscular Integration is based on the work of Ida Rolf. While practitioners learn classical Rolfing techniques, they also learn a lighter touch and are taught more flexibility in approach. Neuromuscular Integration also includes emotional/psychological integration techniques to aid in the reintegration of body, mind, and spirit.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming NLP (D) – Cat A

Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is an approach to psychotherapy and organizational change based on “a model of interpersonal communication chiefly concerned with the relationship between successful patterns of behavior and the subjective experiences (esp. patterns of thought) underlying them” and “a system of alternative therapy based on this which seeks to educate people in self-awareness and effective communication, and to change their patterns of mental and emotional behavior”.

Nutritional Therapy (D) – Cat B

Nutritional Therapy is a therapeutic approach to treating medical conditions and their associated symptoms via the use of a specifically tailored diet devised and monitored by a registered dietician. The diet is based upon the patient’s medical and psychosocial history, physical examination and dietary history. The role of the therapist is to reduce the risk of developing complications in pre-existing conditions such as diabetes as well as ameliorate the effects of any existing conditions such as high cholesterol.

Onsen™ (S) – Cat C

Onsen™ is a combination of three treatment techniques based on fundamental myofascial treatment philosophies. The three components, muscle energy technique, post isometric relaxation, and transverse friction massage, are used together to balance the myofascial system, releasing stress and pain in the body.

Orthobionomy (D) – Cat C

Orthobionomy is an osteopathically-based form of body therapy. By gently exaggerating the body’s preferred postures using movement and body positions the practitioner facilitates the change of stress and pain patterns and engages the body’s self-correcting balance, healing and alignment process.

Orthotherapy (D) – Cat C

Orthotherapy uses massage therapy, stretching, joint mobilization, exercise therapy, postural assessment and basic nutritional counseling to ease muscular pain or stiff joints caused by tension and stress, imbalance in connective tissues, muscles or joints, tissue damage, or systemic problems.

Osteopathy applies the knowledge of the structure (anatomy) and function (physiology) of the body, to all diseases, disorders and dysfunctions. Parent mentoring refers to a personal developmental relationship in which a more experienced or more knowledgeable person helps a less experienced or less knowledgeable person. Mentoring is a process for the informal transmission of knowledge, social capital, and the psychosocial support perceived by the recipient as relevant to work, career, or professional development; mentoring entails informal communication, usually face-to-face and during a sustained period of time, between a person who is perceived to have greater relevant knowledge, wisdom, or experience (the mentor) and a person who is perceived to have less.

Peat Therapy (D) – Cat B

Peat Therapy is the use of peat for therapeutic purposes; a type of pelotherapy. The peat used usually meets hygienic requirements, is highly decomposed (more than 60 percent), and has been heated to 42°–52°C. Peat therapy is more easily tolerated than treatment with sediment mud, from which peat differs by its substantial content of organic matter, lower heat conductivity, greater heat capacity, and higher optimum temperature. Shiatsu Therapy is based on the Eastern Medical model in which Ki, or life energy, is believed to flow through pathways or meridians in the body. Sotai was founded by a Japanese M.D. Keizo Hashimoto(1897-1993). Although a medical doctor Dr. Hashimoto was known more for his techniques of exercise and structural adjustment than the Western medical treatments widespread in Japan. He spent over 50 years developing this unique natural healing technique while researching many different types of alternative medicine available. He gained a large following in the natural healing community in the last quarter of the 20th century. His philosophy was “body malalignment is the cause of all diseases. Thus, all diseases can be cured if the body regains its natural alignment.”

Sports Massage (S) – Cat C

Sports Massage therapists have a special interest in the needs of professional athletes, and people that regularly participate in sports. The two main aspects are conditioning and injury prevention work, and rehabilitation should injury occur. Usually approached through massage, exercise and stretching programs.

Stone Therapy (D/S)- Cat C

Stone Therapy is a type of massage that uses either heated or chilled round, smooth stones that are placed on key points on the body. The stones are also used by the therapist to massage the body and transfer the heat or cold to the client. Stone Therapy recognition requires discipline-level training in a pre-requisite modality. Tai Chi Instructor (D) – Cat B

Tai Chi instructors help practitioners polish the Tai Chi forms which are based on 4000 years of Confucianism and Taoism philosophy. Tai Chi works on many levels: physical conditioning of strength, flexibility, and resilience; mental focus and clarity; and creating proper flow and balance of the Chi throughout the body.

Thai Massage (D/S) – Cat C

Thai Massage developed over 2500 years ago from meridian theory and Ayurvedic medicine which was brought to Thailand. The stretches and strokes, done to clothed clients on floor mats or low tables, open the joints and stimulate blood flow. At least 104 postures, from yogic origins, are used.

Thalassotherapy (D) – Cat B 

Thalassotherapy is the medical use of seawater as a form of therapy. The properties of seawater are believed to have beneficial effects upon the pores of the skin ] Thalassotherapy was developed in seaside towns in BrittanyFrance during the 19th century.  

Therapeutic Recreation (D) – Cat C

Therapeutic recreation personnel began in 1956 with the establishment of the Commission for the Advancement of Hospital Recreation (CAHR). In 1967, with the formation of the National Therapeutic Recreation Society (NTRS), the NTRS Registration Board continued the voluntary registration program for therapeutic recreation personnel. NCTRC was founded in 1981 as an independent credentialing agency designed to meet national credentialing standards in the United States.

The field of therapeutic recreation has also shown tremendous growth and development over the past two decades. Today, the United States Department of Labor projects that there are over 27,000.

Recreational Therapist, qualified is an individual who, at a minimum, is a graduate of a baccalaureate degree program in recreational therapy accredited by a nationally recognized accreditation body; is currently a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC); meets any current legal requirement of licensure, registration, or certification; or has the documented equivalent in education, training and experience and is currently competent in the field. There is not an equivalent standard in Canada.

Therapeutic Touch™ (D/S) – Cat C

Therapeutic Touch™ is a simple system of energy healing developed by the nurses Delores Krieger and Dora Kunz. The practitioners center their own energy, then proceed to assess and smooth out, balance, and energize the recipient’s energy field. One of the first energy therapies openly used in medical settings.

Touch for Health™ (D) – Cat C

Touch for Health™ uses muscle testing to determine an imbalance in the muscles and organs. Practitioners then use muscle manipulation techniques, acupressure-like treatments, lymphatic massage, some basic cranial sacral therapy moves, and perhaps nutritional or herbal counseling (if so trained) for treatment. Touch for Health is a system of balancing posture, attitude and life energy to relieve stress, aches and pains, feel and function better, be more effective, clarify and achieve your goals and enjoy your life!

Thought Field Therapy (D) – Cat B

 Thought Field Therapy, is a fringe psychological treatment developed by an American psychologist, Roger Callahan.[2] Its proponents say that it can heal a variety of mental and physical ailments through specialized “tapping” with the fingers at meridian points on the upper body and hands

This covers a broad range of traditional practices spread throughout Asian including various forms of herbal medicine, acupuncture, massage therapy and dietary therapy. The common thread among these diverse practices is a system for balancing the various functions of the body, based on Daoist principles of yin-yang and other metaphysical belief systems. These practices are a common part of medical care throughout East Asia but are considered alternative health care in western care or Canada.

Trager® (D) – Cat C

The Trager® Approach is a system of movement re-education and bodywork promoting health and freedom of movement. Treatment facilitates deep relaxation, increased physical mobility, and mental clarity; it is used for health maintenance, rehabilitation, and pain management and relief.

Trigger Point Therapy (S) – Cat C

Trigger Point Therapy utilizes compression, stretch, and hydrotherapy to release active, tightened, or referred trigger points that create pain in muscle tissue. The area of pain could extend from or be some distance from the active trigger point or points.

Tuina (D/S) – Cat C

Tuina combines soft-tissue massage, acupressure, and other manipulation techniques that realign the musculoskeletal and ligamentous relationships. The focus is to help the body heal itself through the harmonious Qi flow that results from the work on muscles, pain sites, acupressure points, and energy meridians.

Visceral Manipulation™ (S) – Cat C

Visceral Manipulation™ is a manual therapy that focuses on improving the function of the internal organs and their associated environment and influence. It uses specific placement of soft manual forces to encourage the normal mobility, tone and motion of the viscera and their connection tissues.

Watsu (D) – Cat C

Watsu is derived from shiatsu in its theory and general approach. However, it has been developed specifically for application in a water environment, and uses a number of flowing, rocking, extension and cradling motions and patterns to relieve stress, return joint mobility, and movement fluidity.

Whole Brain Integration™ (S) – Cat B

Whole Brain Integration™ helps integrate communication of the brain’s right and left hemispheres through cross-body exercises. Zero Balancing – The practitioner uses comfortable finger pressure and gentle traction to engage body structure and body energy. Clients experience deep relaxation, internal organization, and improved function 

 Zumba Instructor (D) – Cat B 

 Zumba a Latin-inspired dance fitness program created by dancer and choreographer Alberto “Beto” Perez in Colombia during the 1990s. Zumba involves dance and aerobic elements. Zumba’s choreography incorporates hip-hopsambasalsamerenguemambomartial arts, and some Bollywood and belly dance moves. Squats and lunges are also included.
